Chapter Summary

In the third year of King Belshazzar's reign, Daniel experiences a vision while by the river Ulai in Susa. He sees a ram with two horns pushing westward, northward, and southward until a male goat with a single notable horn arrives from the west, moving so quickly it does not touch the ground. The goat destroys the ram, but at the height of its power, its great horn is broken and replaced by four others. From one of these, a little horn emerges, growing exceedingly great and challenging the host of heaven and the sanctuary. Seeking the meaning, Daniel is approached by the angel Gabriel, who explains that the ram represents the kings of Media and Persia, while the goat represents the king of Greece. The vision details the rise of a fierce king who will cause great destruction and oppose the prince of princes before being broken without human hands. Daniel is left overwhelmed and ill by the weight of the revelation.
