32These are those who were counted of the children of Israel by their fathers’ houses. All who were counted of the camps according to their armies were six hundred three thousand five hundred fifty.

33But the Levites were not counted among the children of Israel, as the LORD commanded Moses.

34Thus the children of Israel did. According to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so they encamped by their standards, and so they set out, everyone by their families, according to their fathers’ houses.

Chapter Summary

In Numbers Chapter 2, the Lord instructs Moses and Aaron on the orderly arrangement of the Israelites' camp. The tribes are organized into four major divisions, each assigned a specific direction relative to the Tent of Meeting. The camp of Judah, including the tribes of Issachar and Zebulun, occupies the east side. Reuben, with Simeon and Gad, is positioned on the south. The west side is assigned to Ephraim, Manasseh, and Benjamin, while Dan, Asher, and Naphtali are stationed on the north. In the center of these camps resides the Tent of Meeting with the Levites. Each division is led by a designated prince and has specific census counts, totaling 603,550 men eligible for service, excluding the Levites. This structured layout ensured that as the nation moved through the wilderness, every family had a specific place based on their lineage and tribal banner, maintaining strict order during both rest and travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

The tribes were arranged in four groups of three, positioned at the cardinal directions around the Tent of Meeting. Each group had a primary tribe that led the division under a specific banner, with Judah on the east, Reuben on the south, Ephraim on the west, and Dan on the north.

The Levites and the Tent of Meeting were positioned in the center of the other tribal camps. This arrangement emphasized that the presence of God was the physical and spiritual focal point of the entire Israelite community.

The total number of men counted for the armies, excluding the Levites, was 603,550. This census was organized by their fathers' houses and tribal divisions as commanded by God.

Study Note
