44These are those who were counted, whom Moses and Aaron counted, and the twelve men who were princes of Israel, each one for his fathers’ house.

45So all those who were counted of the children of Israel by their fathers’ houses, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war in Israel—

46all those who were counted were six hundred three thousand five hundred fifty.

47But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not counted among them.

48For the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

49“Only the tribe of Levi you shall not count, neither shall you take a census of them among the children of Israel;

50but appoint the Levites over the Tabernacle of the Testimony, and over all its furnishings, and over all that belongs to it. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; and they shall take care of it, and shall encamp around it.

Chapter Summary

Numbers Chapter 1 begins in the wilderness of Sinai, where God instructs Moses to take a census of every male in Israel aged twenty and older who is capable of going to war. Moses and Aaron, assisted by one leader from each tribe, conduct the count by families and ancestral houses. The census results in a total of 603,550 men from twelve tribes, with Judah being the most populous. Notably, the tribe of Levi is not included in this military count. Instead, the Levites are formally set apart to care for the Tabernacle of the Testimony, including its transport and maintenance. They are instructed to camp immediately around the Tabernacle to protect the rest of the congregation and ensure the sanctity of the holy site as the nation prepares to move through the wilderness.

Frequently Asked Questions

God commanded the census to determine the number of men aged twenty and older who were capable of military service. This helped organize the tribes as they prepared for the journey and potential conflicts on the way to the Promised Land.

The tribe of Levi was not counted in the general census because they were designated for religious service rather than warfare. Their primary responsibility was the care, transport, and protection of the Tabernacle and its furnishings.

One leader or prince from each of the twelve tribes was appointed to assist Moses and Aaron. These twelve men were heads of their respective ancestral houses and acted as representatives for their tribes during the counting process.

Study Note

The census reflects a transition of the Israelites from a group of former slaves into a highly structured and organized national assembly ready for travel and defense.
