1Listen to this word which I take up for a lamentation over you, O house of Israel:

2“The virgin of Israel has fallen;

3For the Lord GOD says:

4For the LORD says to the house of Israel:

5but don’t seek Bethel,

6Seek the LORD, and you will live,

7You who turn justice to wormwood,

8Seek him who made the Pleiades and Orion,

9who brings sudden destruction on the strong,

10They hate him who reproves in the gate,

11Therefore, because you trample on the poor and take taxes from him of wheat,

12For I know how many are your offenses,

13Therefore a prudent person keeps silent in such a time,

14Seek good, and not evil,

15Hate evil, love good,

16Therefore the LORD, the God of Armies, the Lord, says:

17In all vineyards there will be wailing,

18“Woe to you who desire the day of the LORD!

19As if a man fled from a lion,

20Won’t the day of the LORD be darkness, and not light?

21I hate, I despise your feasts,

22Yes, though you offer me your burnt offerings and meal offerings,

23Take away from me the noise of your songs!

24But let justice roll on like rivers,

25“Did you bring to me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years, house of Israel?

26You also carried the tent of your king and the shrine of your images, the star of your god, which you made for yourselves.

27Therefore I will cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus,” says the LORD, whose name is the God of Armies.

Chapter Summary

In Amos Chapter 5, the prophet delivers a lamentation for the house of Israel, describing the nation's fall as a consequence of their rebellion. He repeatedly urges the people to seek the Lord and live, warning against relying on religious centers like Bethel or Gilgal. The chapter highlights specific social sins, such as the mistreatment of the poor and corruption in the legal system at the city gates. Amos contrasts God’s power as the Creator of the stars with the fragility of human pride. He introduces a startling warning about the Day of the Lord, clarifying that it will be a time of darkness and judgment rather than light for the unrighteous. Finally, God expresses His disdain for empty religious ceremonies, burnt offerings, and music, demanding instead that justice flow like a river and righteousness like an ever-failing stream before predicting the nation's eventual captivity beyond Damascus.

Frequently Asked Questions

In this context, seeking the Lord involves turning away from idol worship and pursuing what is good. It is tied directly to treating others fairly and upholding justice in the community.

Amos warns that the Day of the Lord is not a time of celebration for the people, but a day of darkness and judgment. He uses metaphors of meeting a bear after fleeing a lion to show that there is no escape from divine justice.

God rejects these religious activities because the people were practicing them while simultaneously exploiting the poor and ignoring justice. The text indicates that worship is meaningless to God when it is not accompanied by righteous behavior.

Study Note

The mention of the Pleiades and Orion in verse 8 serves as a reminder of God's sovereign power over the cosmos, contrasting His eternal nature with the temporary power of human oppressors.
